Killer Queen

12 June 2011 131 comments

Me and my seven clones, performing the Queen classic “Killer Queen” on vocals and several instruments.

Update: This recording is now available on iTunes. Buy it right now! :D
(Written by Freddie Mercury, published by EMI Glenwood Music Corporation)

This one took a lot longer to make than I had planned, but now it’s finally finished! The problem was that although I used a yellow/green-ish sheet behind the couch, it obviously didn’t help at all when I wanted to make the red couch transparent, so that the red accordion and guitar could be in front of the main Fredrik. I did the best I could, and it’s certainly not perfect, but it will have to do. It’s the music that counts anyway, right?

I learned a lot about chroma keying anyway, and if I’d ever want to do a video similar to this (and the other multi-Fredrik videos, like The Cartoon Medley, and The TV Theme Medley), I would do a much better job!

Oh, and maybe I should tell you about my choice for a cover: I have always said that I don’t want to do any full covers, because they’ve already been made by so many other people, so it’s not that fun to just imitate. But I had been thinking about doing an a cappella version of Killer Queen for a while, because it has such great and interesting harmonies! And then I added instruments one by one to make it more interesting.
I’m satisfied with the results, and I hope you enjoyed it too!

Btw, great video once again, you never cease to amaze me. Also like the new layout of the site since last I logged on.

So this was the song you had some trouble working on right, or was this another project?

  • FreddeGredde (author) said:

    Nope, it was this one.

Well done; quite the treat after a rough weekend of work. I was hooked in by your Windwaker medley (which I could listen to on endless loop without a problem), and my feedback fits the majority of your pieces: cute video, entrancing music. You certainly have a gift, and we’re all fortunate that you’re putting it to such good use.

Looking forward to your album with bated breath. :-)

Everton: Well, because I’ve already made a Queen cover now. :) I prefer doing new things every time. I really like The Prophet’s Song though! One of my favorites by Queen.

  • Everton said:

What about Mutantes’ “Batmacumba”? Or maybe something from The Beatles, like “Because” :)?

Again, you made a nice job, man!

  • BigLord said:

That was friggin amazing. And I didn’t even know about the original song! You made me fall in love with it.

I was going to criticize you about the green screen failures, but you DIDN’T use a proper green screen so you’re excused :D I wish I could do half as better as you did if I did something like that, haha.

BTW… joining the chorus of comments on youtube now: what do you think of doing Bohemian Rhapsody next?

Wow, you really nailed this one !

I was still a kid as the original version came out.
I liked it a lot. And one day my dad wanted to hear
the music I was listening to all the time (I taped it).
He said he was surprised by the chords and tempi.
I didn’t really understand what he meant by that,
but he ‘approved’ this wacky glam-rock act :-)

I’ve heard many covers of the song, later on.
None of them performed it so uniquely like you.
And it’s even fun to watch !

  • Gail said:

I’d love to see you perform something by Talking Heads!

oh and just a thought -

Also excellent voice and arrangement, congratulations.
    Cris

PS Is it your own arrangement? Or can I get the score anywhere? Thanks

  • FreddeGredde (author) said:

    Everyone: Thanks a lot! :)

Cris: It’s my own arrangement, but I did my best to reproduce the same notes as the original. I even listened to to this video to make sure it was as correct as possible: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mT8L9GGPFvk

  • Luke said:

I’ve been a Queen fan for decades. The cover was amazing, and the video was funny as heck! Fantastic job :) Incidentally, I saw the video for the first time today on msn.com.

I know you don’t want to do full covers (from what I’ve read of your comments so far), but would you consider doing a Bohemian Rhapsody cover?

  • FreddeGredde (author) said:

Luke: Sorry, not gonna do a Bohemian Rhapsody cover. It’s been played too many times already! (Even I have actually performed it live once.)

  • Raz said:

Freddey, I love your original songs, but why don’t you publish more covers? TV Theme Medley and Killer Queen are my favorites.
And one more question: How many instruments can you play? I can play only the piano and the recorder..

  • FreddeGredde (author) said:

Raz: It feels like I’ve answered those questions everywhere and all the time. :P But, it depends on what counts as “can play”. If I get an hour to learn to play a certain (simple enough) thing, I could probably do it with any instrument.
Also, I don’t really like covers. It was fun to make medleys at first, because it was new, but now that’s been done. And Killer Queen was an exception because it’s a song with lots of variation, and it worked well to play with lots of different instruments.

  • Brenda said:

That was awesome!!! I enjoyed it! How in the world do you make those videos?

  • Susi said:

Hi Fredrik, Im in love with your voice!
